Townies (1944)

Per Aunt Jane:

The townies (I had to look with magnifier) is something that is added by the “poster maker” to show what was gong on in the town at the time, I guess.

I went up to an album and found Hingham Journal picture and reporting of occasion. I took train to NC and Boot Camp on January 11, l944 although I was sworn in in late 1943 but had to wait for a troop train filled with other NE women to head south. This picture taken a week before on a Thursday evening. All big social events at the USO were held a Thursday; former military men, volunteers, patrons, etc., invited.

During the week USO was open all the time as a respite for the military. Forgotten how many Hingham people involved-of course this was wartime. Very interesting article I had completely forgotten The military that are pictured are Marines from the base in West Hingham and the British sailors around at that time for their training on the DEs and LSTs. (That is how Newtie met Ian). Entertained all of them in various ways besides USO.

So here we are. The picture taken Jan 1944.
