Thank you Marcy. These are wonderful.
Townies (1944)
Per Aunt Jane:
The townies (I had to look with magnifier) is something that is added by the “poster maker” to show what was gong on in the town at the time, I guess.
I went up to an album and found Hingham Journal picture and reporting of occasion. I took train to NC and Boot Camp on January 11, l944 although I was sworn in in late 1943 but had to wait for a troop train filled with other NE women to head south. This picture taken a week before on a Thursday evening. All big social events at the USO were held a Thursday; former military men, volunteers, patrons, etc., invited.
During the week USO was open all the time as a respite for the military. Forgotten how many Hingham people involved-of course this was wartime. Very interesting article I had completely forgotten The military that are pictured are Marines from the base in West Hingham and the British sailors around at that time for their training on the DEs and LSTs. (That is how Newtie met Ian). Entertained all of them in various ways besides USO.
So here we are. The picture taken Jan 1944.
(This great photo of Alex and Jeff standing in front of the giant Townies “poster” which hangs at a mall somewhere near the Hingham Shipyard and shows Aunt Jane and Grandma Doble. Taken Oct. 2014. Thank you Marcy.)

Palace furniture in new home
Hi all,
I thought you might like to see the Palace patio furniture in it’s new home. We had to shore up quite a bit, which apparently isn’t uncommon for patio furniture of this era. As this blog post says:
“know that they have seen better days – people are throwing them out for a reason – often need repair or reinforcing or downright replacement parts.”
I don’t know how much longer they will last but for now they are comfortable in their golden years, well tended to and well loved. We consider them on loan and if for some reason, they are recalled, we can always bring them back.
Family History Documents Now Available
Hello all.
Since returning from the Cape this summer I’ve been able to put a couple of interesting family history documents up on the Palace website under the Family History page. The page is password protected. Please email me or Sue and we will send the password. Enjoy!
- Memoir of Henrietta French Doble (1864 -1954) – Written at the urging of her two daughters, Claris and Henrietta around 1948. (154 pages PDF)
- Grandma Doble Oral History (1989) Conducted by Phyllis Harmon, Creator of Living Histories. There are approx. 7 hours of audio files for your listening pleasure. Each file is an mp3 and is approx. 30MB in size. Right click on the link to download the file or just click it to stream over the web. Thanks to Aunt Jane and Sylvia for the tapes and permission.
On another note: I will soon add digital copies of the minutes of past cousin’s meetings going back to 1994 under the minutes page. Again the page is password protected. Thanks to Abby for her excellent record keeping.
We can do more of this. Marcy, you said you said you have some photos? Please send when you can.
Working to fix the calendar too.
Why does summer have to be ending?
All the best y’all.
Rick
